Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), the zoologist, Darwinist, science populariser, church critic, monist and philosopher, was one of the world’s best-known and most controversial naturalists of his time. Haeckel’s extensive and thematically diverse correspondence is an important and informative source for the history of the biosciences from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. In addition, it provides essential insights into all of his publications and research activities, it reveals material about his many travels and provides information about the networks of his family, scientific and social contacts, and thus is able to document his scientific, cultural and ideological influence in a unique way.
The aim of this online edition of letters is to make all of Haeckel’s surviving correspondence available in digital form. In the first stage of development, the online edition will provide a repertory with the metadata of the letters identified for research. In the second stage, the associated full texts will be successively published. In the course of the text-critical edition of the letters, the metadata that has been provisionally assessed will be re-checked and, if necessary, supplemented and corrected.
